One of the tools in hazard reduction efforts is the removal of heavy vegetation growth under controlled conditions to reduce the fuels available to future wildfires. Vegetation is generally removed using mechanical methods – such as mulching or chipping – or prescribed (controlled) fires under manageable conditions.
